Process

Wood panels are painted with acrylic paint, laid down generously in multiple layers from light to dark. A thin layer of matte black paint makes the final surface.

Images are collected — usually from archives of space probe missions such as Juno, Cassini, or Kaguya — and arranged into a grid. That grid is then engraved into the painted panels using a laser cutter. Varying the power & speed of the laser, and adjusting the levels of the image, allow fine tuning of the colors revealed by the engraving process.

Engraved panels are scanned at a high resolution. Bringing those digital files into Photoshop, they are then cleaned up as needed and sliced and exported as individual frames.

Finally, individual frames are strung together in video editing software and animated.

Finished grids of panels look nice on the wall, too.
